Water Management PBHMD’s ‘Demand Management’ strategy remains in place for outdoor water use in Falcon Hills.  The Board encourages residents to practice voluntary water conservation and observe scheduled irrigation times in an effort to reduce inefficient water use.  In short, the District requests that residential and commercial landscape irrigation be limited to three days a week:  Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.  This sensible practice is to be observed regardless of weather conditions.  Please adjust your sprinklers to water either early morning (before 10 a.m.) or late evening (after 6 p.m.) to minimize unnecessary water loss.  Don’t inadvertently water driveways, streets, or rock beds.  Remember to cut back or eliminate watering during rainy periods.  Drip irrigation systems for trees/shrubs can be used any day of the week.  Low-volume hand water (for trees/plants/shrubs) is also acceptable any day using a watering can or garden hose equipped with a trigger nozzle.  Scheduling neighborhood irrigation times helps us plan work/rest times for our wells and more easily manage the water levels in our storage tanks, which is important when you consider the following facts:

ü      About 50% of the water usage in Falcon Hills is for landscape irrigation?

ü      The total capacity in our water storage tanks is 1,500,000 gallons?

ü      We need to maintain the tanks at just over 1/3-full (approximately 525,000 gallons) in order to ensure adequate fire protection for Falcon Hills residents?

ü      Total usage for the entire Falcon Hills neighborhood can be as much as 15,000,000 gallons during the hotter months of the summer?

The District’s ‘Demand Management’ strategy also serves as a reminder that we live in a semi-arid region -- while a water shortage does not currently exist, long-term ‘abuse’ of our water supplies can jeopardize their future sustainability.  Customers should also be aware that voluntary water conservation measures, can help reduce depletion of the aquifers (our major water source), minimize the need for supplementary sources, and help hold down future water rate increases.

Water Conservation Tips  With the high heat of summer and outdoor water use at its peak throughout PBHMD, here are some great conservation tips for you and your.

1.       Water as infrequently as possible, without causing undue stress on the lawn. Bluegrass dormancy (slight browning) is not harmful during warm weather months, as long as weeds are kept in check.

2.       Give your lawn only enough water to stay healthy, minimizing puddles and runoff. Water between the hours of 9 p.m. and 9 a.m., when its cooler, less windy and less likely to evaporate.

3.       Mow/mulch your lawn with a sharp blade, setting your mower deck height to at least 3” (or higher).

4.       Postpone fertilization until fall

5.       Concentrate your watering efforts on trees and shrubs (especially young ones) and apply mulch at their base – woody plants are more difficult and expensive to replace than grass.

6.       Make sure your irrigation system is operating correctly and sprinkler heads are properly adjusted so water is not wasted on streets and driveways.

7.       Use broom instead of hose to clean driveways and side walks.

Volunteers Needed for Park Projects   A new park is planned at the south end of Carrington Drive in the western portion of the Falcon Hills neighborhood.  The District has already received some grant funding to help with the development of Drayton Green.  Public input on this project is always welcome – along with volunteer assistance.  Park site plans can be downloaded below.   The plans were drawn during the preliminary stages of each park project, so they don’t represent a final as-built.  Contact the District office if you have any questions or wish to help us with any park project.
